Eircom denies that it has been charging customers for equipment which is no longer in use.

The telephone company says it is up to people to inform them if they have replaced their Eircom phone.

But vice chairman of the Dáil's Public Accounts Committee John McGuinness says he knows of customers who contacted Eircom but have continued to be charged.

Spokesperson for the company Paul Bradley says he is unaware of any such incidents.

He says Eircom has no need to defend itself on this count:

“It’s not a question of Eircom justifying, customers have a responsibility to inform if they no longer want to rent a phone from Eircom,” he said.

“Anyone who contacts Eircom and no longer wants to continue renting will have those rental charges removed.”
