A fresh round of merger speculation drove the FTSE 100 Index towards the 6000 threshold today, helping it close in positive territory for the first time this week.

Oil and gas exploration group BG was the centre of the latest rumour after traders pondered the possibility of a move by energy giant Exxon Mobil.
