Cable customers to get new TV station
Ireland’s newest television station, Channel 6, will be broadcast to all cable customers, it emerged today.
The Dublin-based channel will be aimed at 15-to-35-year-olds, competing for a slice of younger audiences against RTÉ Two, TV3 and British stations such as Channel 4 and MTV.
It will broadcast a range of movies, music, drama and comedy and will also carry re-runs of shows such as Frasier and Sex And The City as part of the NTL basic package.
Mark Mohan, NTL Ireland marketing and sales director, said it was another exciting step for Irish broadcasters and the TV sector.
“We are committed to supporting indigenous broadcasters and to providing the best content to our customers. This development clearly indicates that there is an appetite amongst viewers, investors and advertisers for more quality Irish content,” he said.
“We will include Channel 6 in our basic TV package and will communicate with customers closer to launch on how they can locate the channel.”
Around 25 people will be employed at the 100% Irish-owned channel.
A launch date for the station has yet to be decided, but management hopes it will be in the next few months. To date the station has raised €14m from a range of investors.
