Former Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie stepped down as boss of struggling publisher Highbury House today just three months into the job.

Former Sun editor Kelvin MacKenzie stepped down as boss of struggling publisher Highbury House today just three months into the job.

Mr MacKenzie decided to leave the publisher of titles such as lads’ magazine Front a week after talks about a refinancing of its debt collapsed.

He has built up a stake of nearly 20% in the business before taking over as executive chairman in September.

He said: “I gave it my best shot but was defeated by a mountain of debt which had been accumulated over the past three years.”
