Insurance giant Prudential sought complete control of internet bank Egg today by pledging to spend £200m (€293m) on buying out fellow shareholders.

The move – valuing the whole of Egg at £973m (€1.43bn) – ends a year of uncertainty for the online business after the Pru had tried without success to sell its present 79% stake in the company.
