Councillors to vote on Fair Trade plan for Dublin
Dublin City Council is due to vote tonight on a motion backing a campaign to make the city Europe's first Fair Trade Capital.
Councillors are expected to approve the motion unanimously as it is being sponsored by all the main parties.
Labour councillor Eric Byrne, who tabled the proposal, said the move to make Dublin a Fair Trade Capital would need the support of schools, trade unions and businesses.
He said Clonakilty in Co Cork was the first Irish town to be awarded Fair Trade status and 34 other Irish locations were currently working towards that goal.
If Dublin succeeds in securing this status, it will be the first European capital city to do so.
