Govt to launch new national consumer agency

The Government is due to launch a new national consumer agency today to replace the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs.

The new body has been given stronger powers than its predecessor and will have the ability to issue closure orders on businesses found guilty of misleading price displays, advertising and labelling.

Its establishment was recommended by the Government's Consumer Strategy Group, which was asked to recommend measures to improve consumer protection in Ireland.
