The Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAI) has reported a record year for student intake in 2004.

Last year almost 1,100 new students were registered in training contracts beating the previous record of 1026 set in 2001. This amounts to a 70% increase over the last decade.

97% of the student intake are graduates/post graduates. A recent survey of the accountancy profession in the UK and Ireland found that ICAI has among the highest percentage of female members and the highest percentage of female students – 55% in 2004.

Commenting on the figures, ICAI president, Terence O’Rourke said: “We are delighted to see that chartered accountancy remains the accounting career of choice for young graduates."
