VW introduce 'clean-burning' diesel cars

Volkswagen brought a vision of clean-burning diesel cars to the Los Angeles Auto Show yesterday, saying the technology is a better alternative to hybrids or fuel cell cars in the short run.

Bernd Pischetsrieder, chairman of the German automaker, touted new diesel technology as cleaner and more efficient in his keynote speech at the show.

“In the end, it’s what works on the road,” he said.

Few diesel models are offered in the US because the fuel is perceived as polluting and foul-smelling. Chrysler’s introduction of a diesel-powered Jeep Liberty is one of the few exceptions.

Pischetsrieder said diesel provides a clean-burning source of fuel without confusing or intimidating drivers. He said new diesel blends provide performance and reduced emissions.
