Retailing facing huge change, says industry leader
Foreign competition, new laws and changing tastes of Irish consumers are changing the face of Irish retailing, a leading retail representative declared today.
David Fitzsimons, chief executive of CREST, was speaking as he launched the 2004 FBD CREST Retail Excellence Awards Scheme.
CREST is a Government funded non-profit initiative established in 1995 to aid in the development and support of the independent retail sector. CREST represents over 500 Irish independent retailers with an estimated turnover of over €900m.
"This (FBD CREST Retail Excellence) awards scheme has had a considerable impact in improving standards of excellence among independent Irish retailers since it was introduced six years ago", Mr Fitzsimons added.
The organisers are expecting a record entry this year. Last year the awards had over 300 entrants and the winners ranged from butchers shops, convenience stores and jewellers locally, to Saks of Fifth Avenue in the international section.
All stores entered in the awards scheme are visited by mystery shoppers and ultimately judged by an independent panel.
The stores are rated on more than 50 performance variables, including standard of exterior, use of windows, merchandising, store design and service.
This year’s winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Ceremony on November 27 at a dinner in the Marriott Hotel, Druids Glen in Wicklow.
CREST is a Government funded non-profit initiative established in 1995 to aid in the development and support of the independent retail sector.
It works exclusively with those who own or manage independent retail stores. CREST’s primary focus is to advance skills within the sector and to develop high standards of retailing excellence.
