Brewer Scottish & Newcastle today said encouraging sales of its leading beer brands had boosted the business during a year of transformation.

The Edinburgh-based announced a controversial decision to sell its 150-year-old Fountain brewery in Edinburgh, posted a slight rise in pre-tax profits.
