Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines may obtain European Commission approval for their planned merger as early as next week, according to French daily newspaper Les Echos.

The article said an agreement is expected later today which may see the companies make even further concessions to the EU, in order to obtain the go-ahead for their merger.

The first phase of the EU's examination of the merger is expected to end next Wednesday.

The airlines announced the plans for the proposed merger last September. The new group is to be called Air France-KLM.
