Fiat says CEO Galateri to resign

Fiat SpA said CEO Gabriele Galateri has asked to resign from his position and will remain in the post until a successor is named.

Director Pierluigi Bernasconi, representative of IFIL SpA, has also presented his resignation, and the board co-opted IFIL general manager Daniel John Winteler in his place, it said.

"The board, taking note that Gabriele Galateri has manifested the intention to resign, has asked him to say in place until the nomination of a successor in a board meeting to be held soon," it said.

Galateri has accepted this proposal, it said.

"The board has confirmed unaminously its appreciation in the chairman, in the CEO, and in all the management," it said.

A Fiat spokesman said chairman Paolo Fresco remains in place, adding he cannot confirm a government statement the board will meet again Thursday.
