Nortel has announced that around 40 staff from its Irish workforce are to lose their jobs, as part of the company's moves to shed 3,500 additional jobs worldwide.

The job cuts will primarily come from Galway, where the company employs 350 staff.

Nortel has cut over 46,000 jobs from its total workforce since January 2001.

The cuts are not expected to affect the company's staff in Monkstown, where it employs 900 people.

Nortel's announcement of the job losses has not come as a complete surprise, as it announced that it was to shed 3,500 staff in May.

However, the company's recent losses for the second quarter have sparked speculations that more job cuts may be possible in the near future.

Nortel Networks is a Canadian based company supplying networking solutions and services. Its Irish operations are based in Galway, Co Antrim, Shannon and Dublin.
