Terrorism knocks US airports off top spot

Passenger traffic plunged more than 30% at US airports in September, knocking them from the top of the world rankings of busiest terminals.

The Airports Council International says the impact of the US terror attacks and the economic slowdown cut passenger numbers worldwide by 15%.

Tokyo's Haneda was ranked as the world's busiest airport in September, rising from sixth by bucking the trend.

It recorded an increase to 5.18 million passengers, 3.5% higher than the previous September.

London's Heathrow, with a 13.1% drop to 5.1 million passengers, was second, and Frankfurt was third with a 7.2% drop to 4.4 million.

Atlanta's Hartsfield, the previous leader, dropped to fourth place.
