Leeds Sporting is to change its name as details are released of Leeds United's proposed new stadium.

The Premiership soccer club has earmarked a 50-acre site at Skelton, close to junction 45 on the A1/M1 link road on the outskirts of Leeds.

The plan is to build a 50,000 all-seater stadium, which could be ready for the start of the 2004 season.

Shareholders at Leeds Sporting's extraordinary general meeting have also approved the company's name change to Leeds United PLC as of tomorrow.

Executive chairman Peter Ridsdale says: "The new name more accurately reflects the company's role as parent of Leeds United Football Club and will assist in our focus to become a major international football brand."

Some supporters have expressed opposition to any move from Elland Road, but Mr Ridsdale believes David O'Leary's side needs to play in a "world-class stadium".

"I can confirm that the site is Skelton and is the one we have identified as the ideal site," Mr Ridsdale told the club's official website. "I believe we are very close to building a world-class team here and it's now time to deliver a stadium in which they can play, one in which future generations of fans deserve to watch such a team."

Mr Ridsdale, who has become the victim of hate-mail from a small group of fans over the issue, promised that the majority of Leeds supporters would decide on the issue.

"It is now down to the supporters," he said. "There is a three-week open period now for the fans to comment, reply and vote."

Letters outlining the plans are being sent to Leeds United Supporters Club members and shareholders.
