New proposals to shake up EU copyright law and avoid the "exploitation of content" have been put forward by EC president Jean-Claude Juncker during his State of the Union speech in Strasbourg today.

Under the proposals - which it was suggested would also protect newspapers and magazines for the first time - video websites such as YouTube may be forced to pay more to artists and record labels.

The European Commission (EC) proposals would also require platforms to deploy technology that can detect songs or videos which have been requested for removal by rights holders.
