What’s been so surprising about the icy shard of wintry weather that has pierced our flimsy spring is not so much the Arctic chill of the last week, but that we were shocked by it.

After all, this is the rough month of the cuckoo, or the scairbhín (pronounced skara-veen), that time of year when the weather vacillates wildly between sun, icy showers, and wind.
