Gem of a business adds new sparkle to historical Cork shopping area

One of the oldest shopping areas on Cork has been given a new lease of life thanks to a host new tenants, including jeweller Michael Wall.

Specialising in bespoke jewellery, diamonds and gems, along with luxury watch service and repair, Michael is bringing sparkle back to the Winthrop Arcade, Cork's oldest shopping mall.

“It’s truly wonderful to be part of this glorious old dame”, Michael told the Irish Examiner over a coffee in his new premises.

“The Arcade is such a special place within the city, and I think we have the right balance of people to add new life and vigour.”

The arcade well known for its tudor-revival style facades, glass roof, and marble lined walkway welcomed three new tenants.

Carole Horgan from Best of Buds, formerly located on South Mall joins Michael along with Jack Crotty and Simone Kelly’s new eastern-inspired falafel bar ‘EAST’.

In his new premises Michael will welcome clients to the warm inviting space he has created. From design and conception to creation, every aspect is truly bespoke. Diamonds and gems and metals are carefully selected for each piece, and made to the client’s specification.

“There’s no need to be put off by the word bespoke”, Michael explained.

“It’s a term that is usually associated with expense, but you can have a piece created for you in silver and white topaz, as opposed to platinum and diamond. You shouldn’t feel limited.

“If a client wishes to have a piece individually made, it’s not the cost that makes it special. Talking through designs and ideas with an individual or a couple is my favourite part of the process. If you can imagine it, I can create it.”

The concept is simple, and Michael reiterates the importance of using the very best craftspeople to create bespoke pieces, restore and repair luxury watches. “We have extremely talented and creative people in and around our city. Goldsmiths, engravers, watchmakers who have years of experience are always going to be the best people for the job.”
