The bitter pill of Damien Duff’s relegation from top flight football will be softened with new accounts showing that his UK firm is sitting on a cash pile of €1.344m.

Duff’s Fulham were relegated to the Championship after 13 years in the Premier League.

The former Irish international winger has already intimated that he will be leaving Fulham this summer to ply his trade elsewhere.

However, accounts show that the popular 35-year-old Ballyboden man has built up a handsome cash stash during his stellar professional football career.

Accounts lodged by Duff’s Lightzest UK Ltd show that the firm had cash of £1.099m at the end of July 31 last.

Accumulated profits increased marginally from £1.053m to £1.099m last year.

The Dubliner retired from international duty in 2012 but remains one of Ireland’s most popular sportsmen.

He competed for Ireland in the 2002 World Cup and Euro 2012 where he made his final appearance for his country against Italy when he captained the side. At the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, Duff was voted Ireland’s player of the tournament and made it to the UEFA’s team of the year the same year.

In a press interview last month, Duff hinted that he may play in the US’s MLS before returning to Ireland to play out the final days of his football career.

Duff said: “I’m as still as hungry as ever.”
