Two Irish test cases for the mis-selling of payment protection insurance (PPI) were settled in Dublin’s district court yesterday with the plaintiffs receiving compensation.

A client represented by McHale Muldoon solicitors secured a settlement of €3,591 from GE money who elected to settle the case instead of having a judgment registered against them.

Solicitor Micheal Muldoon said GE Money should have settled the case earlier, saving everybody involved from having to go to court.

“I’m delighted for my client. He finally got the result he deserved, that should have come easier and quicker but for the conduct of the lender,” he said.

Mr Muldoon said that his firm now has 200 to 300 cases lined up related to the mis-selling of PPI.

The Central Bank recently carried out a review of PPI policies that were purchased after Jul 2007. The bank instructed 10 lenders to write to 13,000 customers who were due to receive letters this week.

PPI was sold as part of loan agreements covering everything from mortgage, car loans to credit cards, offering insurance to cover payments should a customer lose their job, have an accident or die.

However, up to one in five policies were incorrectly sold to people who could never avail of the cover they purchased due to their personal circumstances.
