The proposed Oireachtas inquiry into the banking crisis could be undermined by the timing of the trial of former Anglo Irish Bank chairman Sean FitzPatrick.

Mr FitzPatrick’s trial is listed for the Criminal Court in Jan 2014. But this would also be the likely start date for an Oireachtas inquiry.

The new Oireachtas (Inquiries, Privileges and Procedures) Bill to cover Oireachtas inquiries is unlikely to be published until the Dáil summer recess.
