Guinness has offered to sell the site of Ireland’s oldest brewery — St Francis Abbey Brewery — to Kilkenny City for €2.1m.

Kilkenny county and city manager Joe Crockett told councillors yesterday that an independent valuation of the lands on the council’s behalf had found the asking price was in keeping with the city centre location.

The 10.6-acre site which is on offer from Guinness parent Diageo is of strategic importance to the economic and social development of the city and county, according to Mr Crockett.
