Boost for Shannon Airport as tenders sought for cargo facility
The DAA is seeking tenders for a third party to operate a 10,000sq metres cargo facility and the successful candidate will be responsible for the successful delivery of the project, including securing planning permission.
The third party will also manage and operate the facility during the expected 33-year lease.
Earlier this month, DAA chairman, David Dilger, told Shannon Chamber of Commerce: “I want to see a really modern, efficient, freight hub established at Shannon and the DAA will invest in that vision, but we will only invest in the vision if we can be reasonably confident of a decent return for that investment.”
The news comes two years after the DAA entered a memorandum of understanding with the Lynxs Group for establishing an international logistics hub at Shannon.
Yesterday, the airport authority confirmed that Lynxs meets the necessary criteria for the project and it has been pre-qualified.
In a statement, the DAA confirmed it is “seeking expressions of interest from companies and/or consortiums to potentially design, build, finance, and operate a multi-user aviation cargo facility at Shannon Airport.
“The current process is to ascertain if there are other companies and/or consortiums with the relevant experience required ahead of a possible tender for the project.
“No final decision has yet been taken to proceed with the project and the request for information does not convey a commitment to proceed with the project.”
According to Joe Carey TD: “This is positive news for the airport and the region in that there is now finally some real movement on this project.
“Realising this facility can act as a catalyst for unlocking the potential for jobs in the region and the renewal of Shannon Airport as an international facility.
“This project has been spoken about for long enough. We need to move speedily to the next stage without further delay.”
