Macra president: Young farmers have central role to play in debates

The young farmer group leader said that the need to incorporate young farmers’ views into the CAP reform debate will be a core subject at this weekend’s Macra na Feirme Young Farmer Agricultural Conference in the Arklow Bay Hotel, Co Wicklow.

Michael Gowing said: “Young farmers and new entrants to agriculture are a ready supply of the much sought after entrepreneurs that will play a vital role in economic recovery and the development of Ireland’s smart economy and the Government must ensure that young farmers are encouraged to remain in the agricultural industry through young farmer start-up packages and targeted supports.

“The theme of this year’s agricultural conference is Farming for Profit, which focuses on the economic potential of the farming industry in Ireland. Young farmers are well placed to assist in the recovery of the Irish economy but must receive the necessary supports in the upcoming CAP reform.”

Other highlights of this year’s rally will include the national final of the Irish Farmers’ Journal Know Your Agriculture table quiz, the Bord Bia beef and sheep stockjudging competitions, the AIB Club of the Year final, and the Best New Macra Member competition, the National Dairy Council GAA 7-a-side and live music each night over the weekend.

Mr Gowing said: “It’s a weekend not to be missed and is the highpoint of the Macra year. I’m certainly looking forward to my second rally as president and I look forward to meeting as many of our members as possible.”
