That latest update means that the telecommunications specialist has added more than 200,000 customers since publishing its annual results just two months ago.

The company has also said that its market share has increased in each of its core markets around the Caribbean and Central America. Mr O’Brien, who acts as the company’s executive chairman, launched Digicel nearly 10 years ago, initially basing it out of Jamaica where the group continues to be headquartered and where it controls 70% of the market.

The company serves 32 countries, with its presence stretching to parts of Oceania and the South Pacific region. In recent weeks Digicel has launched a 3G (third generation) service in Bermuda and WiMAX technology in Jamaica.

Commenting on the customer growth, Digicel chief executive Colm Delves said: “It’s an exciting time for us. We’re very pleased with the continued growth we’re achieving across all of our markets and our new technology launches in Bermuda and Jamaica have been really well received and are set to change the mobile and broadband landscapes in those markets.”

Back in June, Digicel reported a 12% increase in annual revenues to $2.2bn (€1.7bn), for the year to the end of March, with subscriber numbers up to 10.8m. That figure has risen to over 11m since then.

In its last financial year, the company saw a 31% increase in data revenues and an 18% rise in its post-paid subscriber base.
