Four pilot trails launched as part of walks scheme

A NEW publicly funded walks scheme is to be initially launched in four pilot areas after years of controversy over access by walkers to land for recreational purposes.

Under the scheme, landowners will receive payments for the development, maintenance and enhancement of approved, marked ways and looped walking routes that pass through their land or, alternatively, their maintenance under the Rural Social Scheme.

Participation in the scheme will be optional and access granted by permission of the landholder.
