Call for new bovine tagging system
“The fact that almost 325,000 single tags and more than 96,000 full replacement tags had to be issued in 2007 continues to be a concern of mine,” he said.
Mr Crawford said the situation should also concern the Agriculture Minister Mary Coughlan, but he claimed she declares herself satisfied with a system that has deteriorated in comparison to 2006 figures.
He said part of a farmers’ income can be removed if animals are found without tags.
“It is high time the minister looked at a more secure system, either by implant or other means to solve this serious problem,” he said.
He asked Ms Coughlan in a Dáil question if she has examined alternative systems such as other types of tags or implants.
In a written reply, she said she is satisfied the system of double tagging bovine animals with plastic tags is the most efficient and practical form of identification available.
“My department stays abreast of developments in the area and is researching the possible future use of electronic and other means of identification for bovine animals,” she said.
