Cubic to allow users free roaming

CUBIC Telecom has secured €5 million funding for the development of projects, which includes a product that offers customers free mobile roaming calls.

Cork city-based Cubic Telecom said this funding will allow them to become the world’s first truly global mobile service provider.

Its main product allows mobile users calling each other between countries to bypass roaming charges.

Customers are issued with a unique SIM card with a new number for their mobile phone.

The card is allowed roam for free as it is attached to a landline number.

Co-founder and chief executive officer Pat Phelan said: “We want a world in which you can pick up your mobile phone anywhere and call anyone for as long as you like and not worry about the price.

“When most people think about driving down the cost of telephone calls, they think of calling from computer-to-computer. We don’t. We deliver simple, high-quality, high-value telephone services direct to their mobile phones.

“There’s no software to download, nothing to configure, nothing new to learn. Our service is straightforward and our network caters to all.”

Mr Phelan established his initial roaming product, Roam4Free through Cubic Telecom, a business he founded with his partners, Tony Duncan and Alan Keane and Cork Luigi Malone’s owner, Don Jeffery.

Cubic Telecom began franchising its low-cost telecoms operations last year and is now worth an estimated €15m.

It said its core target market is aggrieved customers across the globe who don’t understand why they can’t get value for money when making international calls and roaming.

The company is headquartered in Cork with offices in Vancouver, Canada, and offers service in 160 countries. Cubic is about to begin a press launch tour in the US prior to a large west coast USA announcement.
