A PROPOSAL by the European Commission to elevate Brazil to the status of strategic partner has been described by the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association as a strategic blunder.

ICMSA Beef and Cattle Committee chairman Martin McMahon said the Irish Government should totally oppose the move until such time as Brazilian standards for beef imports into the EU meet the same high standards as those pertaining to Irish producers.

“The current plight of Irish beef producers is unsustainable and results directly from the EU Commission policy of allowing lower standard imported beef into EU market,” he said.
