GARDA superintendents should be seconded to the private commercial sector as part of their training to help combat crime which costs Irish companies €1 billion a year, a business leader demanded yesterday.

The Director of the Small Firms Association (ISME) Pat Delaney has called for a major offensive against crime aimed at achieving genuine change in how the problems of crime and punishment are dealt with.

“For gardaí to fully understand the requirements of business a pilot scheme should be introduced for middle ranking gardaí above the level of inspector to be seconded to private business as part of their professional development,” he said.
