THE ISEQ index of shares fell 14.78 points yesterday to close at 3733.88

BoI falls as offer rejected

Bank of Ireland dragged the index lower after Abbey National rejected it’s offer, trading as low as 8.55 during the afternoon session.

Positive was Anglo Irish Bank gaining 17c to 6.17.

First Active added 5c to 4.60 while Allied Irish Bank also finished 5c higher at 12.30.

Elsewhere Irish Life & Permanent slipped 13c to 11.00. Overall, the financial index of shares declined by 87.29 points to 7589.93. Construction stock CRH gained 27c to 11.49 as investors felt that the market had over-reacted following the news over it’s possible asbestos exposure in the US. Grafton Group slipped 2c to 3.43, while Kingspan dropped 7c to 1.45.

There was heavy trading in Barlo Group and the stock plunged 6c to close at 10c. In the food sector, Greencore lost 15c to 2.55, IAWS eased 2c to 6.95 while Kerry Group closed 7c stronger at 12.87.

Other main movers included DCC, up 7c to 9.29, Riverdeep 5c firmer at 1.20 and hotelier Jurys Doyle dropped 20c to 6.80.
