The EU Commission took the view the investment was already in a highly built-up region of Ireland and did not merit grant aid, because it conflicted with EU policy of trying to disperse investment to poorer regions of the economy.

Trade Minister Micheál Martin’s point in yesterday’s paper that few projects need commission clearance puts the mater in perspective. However, the intervention in this instance by the commission puts industrial development and where it is headed in the spotlight once more.
