SIPTU calls for action on pensions

SIPTU president Jack O’Connor has called for mandatory contributions by employers to occupational pensions schemes if the Government’s voluntary scheme fails.

The SIPTU president also called on the State to open pension schemes for children born after January 1, 2005 in a bid to ensure people will have enough to live on in their old age.

Calling for major changes, Mr O’Connor said those living on the State pension should be given a €20-a-week hike in their old age pensions.
