DUBLIN firm Risk Management International (RMI) has beaten off competition from Britain, France and Germany to win a major consulting contract to improve security at the country’s sea and ferry ports.

Irish Ports Association (IPA) chairman Ben Gavin said the contract would allow Irish ports to meet new international standards to counter terrorism and reflected the ongoing importance of shipping to the Irish economy.

Mr Gavin said failure to comply with the International Maritime Organisation code would be “devastating” for the economy because 95% of exports left the country by sea.
