US may block tobacco deal

The US government may try to block RJ Reynolds Tobacco Holdings proposed $3 billion acquisition of Brown & Williamson Tobacco, after antitrust enforcers concluded the combination would stifle competition, analysts said.

Federal Trade Commission lawyers have recommended the agency challenge the plan by RJ Reynolds, the second-largest US tobacco company, to acquire number three Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp.
