ICTU to consider national protest against pension levy
The leadership of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions is meeting today to consider proposals for a national day of demonstration against the controversial pension levy being imposed on public-sector workers.
The proposal was put forward yesterday by the organisation's public services committee.
Trade unions representing public-sector employees have expressed widespread anger over the plan to impose special levies ranging from 3% to almost 10% on their members.
The proposed national day of demonstration would also be aimed at highlighting the concerns of private-sector workers about growing lay-offs, mortgage difficulties and pension problems.
ICTU's public services committee has also suggested that further protests, including industrial action, may be taken in response to the pension levy.
