Japan’s largest bank apologises after theft of millions from safe deposit boxes

Japan’s biggest bank apologised on Monday after an employee allegedly stole more than one billion yen (£5.1 million) from customers’ safe deposit boxes.

The bank, formally known as Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc (MUFG), said that it was investigating and that verified thefts from about 20 of the 60 clients thought to have been affected amounted to 300 million yen (nearly £1.5 million).
