Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte and anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders have defined the Dutch parliamentary election as a litmus test for populism in Europe.

As voters cast their ballots in the parliamentary elections, the latest polls showed two-term premier Mr Rutte's right-wing VVD party leading, with the Party for Freedom's Geert Wilders placing a close second.
