Merkel 'shocked and deeply saddened' by Berlin attack

German chancellor Angela Merkel has said she is "shocked, shaken and deeply saddened" by the attack on a Berlin Christmas market which left at least 12 people dead.

Mrs Merkel told reporters it would be "particularly sickening" if it turns out the attacker was an asylum-seeker who sought refuge in Germany.
