The head of Greenpeace International has written to Russian president Vladimir Putin to offer himself as human bail for 30 environmental activists being detained on piracy charges in Murmansk.

Kumi Naidoo, of the Amsterdam-based organisation, delivered the letter requesting a meeting in Moscow to the Russian embassy in The Hague, Netherlands, today.
