Pope Francis's visit to Brazil raises security concerns

Pope Francis has begun his seven day visit to Brazil.

But his trip has already raised security concerns.

Throngs of people surrounded the Pope's car in Rio de Janeiro - and outnumbered officials who struggled to push the crowds back.

But the Pontiff rolled down his window in the car to wave and shake hands with wellwishers.

Meanwhile violent protests have swept the streets of Rio de Janeiro after the Pope met with the country's president at the State Governors palace.

Police had to use tear gas, water cannon and stun grenades to disperse scores of rioters hurling firebombs after the Catholic leader met with President Dilma Rousseff.

Demonstrators were protesting over government policy but also at the $53m spent on the papal visit.
