Drunk woman arrested for using emergency services to request cigarettes

A drunk US woman called the police to ask them to bring her some cigarettes.

Linda White rang the emergency services at 1am after consuming alcohol because she thought the officers were the "safest person to call" instead of driving to get them while intoxicated – but when the police turned up she was arrested and charged with a misdemeanour count of abuse of 911.

She told NBC News: "We were just kicking it in the backyard - a few beers too many.

"Next thing you know, we're out of cigarettes. Well, I didn't want to drive to town. I was drunk, you know, but in my backyard."

White has since apologised but if found guilty she faces a possible fine of $2,000 (€1,500) and could spend 180 days in jail.
