The 24-year-old man who was arrested after the fatal Colorado gun attack that claimed 12 lives has been moved into solitary confinement.

Police say the move is for James Holmes' own protection.

He was detained after a gunman opened fire in Colorado killing 12 people, including a six-year-old girl.

Fifty-eight others were injured; 11 of them are critically ill.

US President Barack Obama will today visit the families of the people who were killed.

Bomb squad officers in Denver have carried out controlled explosions at the apartment of James Holmes.

FBI Special Agent Jim Yacone said the device was very sophisticated, and "very challenging for all involved".
