A lioness leapt at the throat of a zoo worker on a rural conservation farm and killed him, apparently because security gates were left open, a zoo said.

Colleagues heard Joe Ramonetha screaming and rushed to help but it was too late, Johannesburg Zoo spokeswoman Letta Madlala said. Mr Ramonetha, 63, was declared dead on arrival at hospital.
