Not realising owner Nellie Brady was in the property at the time, David Valencia had drank a third of a bottle of Cognac that he found in the house before executing his crime.

However, after hearing strange noises coming from downstairs, the terrified mother-of-three plucked up the courage to investigate downstairs - where she saw the bare feet of someone she did not know on the sofa.

Prosecutor Amy Jones told a court in Bristol, South West England: "The defendant had to be carried by two police officers to the police car and could not be interviewed until the following day.

"He had no memory, but was not in a position to deny his guilt."
