Runner missing in Alaskan snowstorms found alive, but with severe frostbite
A Kenyan runner who disappeared over the weekend as two snowstorms hit the Alaskan city where he lives has been found alive with severe frostbite on both feet and severe hypothermia.
All-American cross-country runner Marko Cheseto, 28, disappeared a day after his University of Alaska Anchorage teamâs triumphant return from the NCAA Division II West Region championships, where the team won every title.
He was last seen Sunday night, and his room-mates reported him missing on Monday morning.
Authorities looked for signs of him on every major trail in Anchorage, and divers were preparing to search lakes around the campus on Wednesday when he walked into a hotel near campus at about 3.30am.
Steve Cobb, the schoolâs athletic director, said Cheseto was being treated at a local hospital for severe frostbite on both feet. He said officials were waiting to interview Cheseto.
Mr Cobb said he didnât know if Chesetoâs injuries would prevent him from running competitively again.
âWe are just thankful he was found and getting treatment,â he added.
Cheseto was the winner of the West Region the two previous seasons. He made last weekâs trip as team manager.
He took time off from running last season after the suicide of team-mate and fellow Kenyan William Ritekwiang.
