Ugandan president claims victory in disputed election

Uganda's election commission announced today that the long-time president has won a recent poll, an outcome the opposition is rejecting.

The electoral commission said that President Yoweri Museveni won 68% of votes but his challenger Kizza Besigye claimed the election was fraudulent and rejected the results.

The commission said Besigye took 26% of the vote.

Mr Besigye has previously threatened Egypt-style protests if the results are not in line with what he and his supporters believe are the true returns.

Mr Museveni, an ex-rebel commander who seized power at the head of a guerrilla army in 1986, once criticised African rulers who clung to power.

However, he sought another five-year term as a president who has fostered peace, stability and growth.
