Terror suspect extradited to Germany

An alleged Islamic radical has been extradited to Germany and charged today with membership in a foreign terrorist organisation, prosecutors said.

The 25-year old German citizen was officially charged after his extradition from Pakistan a day earlier, the federal prosecutor's office said in a statement.

The suspect, identified only as Rami M, will remain in custody pending trial.

He is suspected of being a member of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, prosecutors said. The radical Islamic group is said to have links to al Qaida and carries out attacks on foreign troops in Afghanistan.

The suspect left Germany in March 2009 to join a terrorist training camp in Pakistan, where he learned how to handle "weapons and explosives", prosecutors said.

He is then alleged to have joined the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan's fighting in the region, the statement said.

The group is suspected of terror attacks mostly targeting Pakistani security forces or Nato's international troops in Afghanistan, prosecutors said.

A German federal judge issued an international arrest warrant against the suspect in April.

A prosecution spokesman said German investigators had no further information regarding his arrest in Pakistan on June 10 and following questioning by local authorities.
