Russia said today it was forced to release pirates captured by its special forces off the coast of Somalia because of “imperfections” in international law.

Initially the pirates were to be taken to Moscow to face criminal charges after hijacking a Russian oil tanker. But the Defence Ministry admitted today they had been freed.
